The goods yard area has been completely relaid with the track set in concrete so that both trains and lorries can use the depot. The Clay trains continue to run and a Class 66 can often be seen parked up waiting it's next turn of duty. Being the original terminus of the Deeside Railway from Aberdeen it was larger than usual for a country station due to the Royal Family using it too and from Balmoral Castle. The station building was of high quailty and design, with towers representing those at Balmoral. The line was eventaully extended to Ballater, which left Aboyne a really nice station but in a lightly populated area. There was also a short tunnel at the north end of the station, which is still there but blocked up. The signalbox also remains but in private use. The line from Inverurie to Elgin was closed due to trackworks and buses ran too and from Elgin, where trains continued to Inverness. Along with seeing Inverurie station and what's left of the Loco Works I also enjoyed a walk along the (river) Don footpath and came across the railway bridge to the south of the station. It looked pretty rundown and needed a good coat of paint. It was originally twin track but has been single tracked since the mid 60's. While the working (down) side is kept in repair the unused Up side looks a sad sight. However as double tracking is on the cards between Inverurie and Aberdeen the bridge should see a welcome upgrade in the near future. I have fond memories working at Inverurie Loco Works and it is sad to see how much the area has been reduced. However, it looks as if the Loco Shed and some outside buildings are to remain on the nsite and the well-known outline of the Depot will remain well into the future. The Metra trains seen here are possibly on the Aurora service that I took to La Grange Road station a couple of days before.
